Waves of the Future

Waves of the Future was JALT2002's conference theme, and it could not have been more appropriate. It was the year when JALT went from almost washing out to forming a whole new swell--it was also the year JALT rediscovered its roots and once again found the volunteer spirit which had, unfortunately, begun to wane.

Nowhere was this more evident than with the annual conference, which had at the middle of the year come perilously close to collapsing. A huge outpouring from volunteers and assistants from every corner of the organization, however, made sure the event not only went ahead, but succeeded at every level.

Thus it is very appropriate that this Proceedings (the final "event" of JALT2002) reflects the same spirit and diversity that went into making the conference such a success. With over 50 papers by 70 writers touching on nearly every aspect of second language teaching and learning, this is a resource with something for everyone. We hope you take pleasure in surfing through this chronicle of the conference.

We would like to offer our sincere appreciation and gratitude to all those people who helped us to bring the Proceedings to this point: our editorial team (Kim Bradford-Watts, Robert Long, Megumi Kawate-Mierzejewska, Amanda O'Brien, Michael Schart, Joseph Sheehan, and Coleman South), our reading committee, and all the writers themselves. A special thanks to Tim Newfields for the photo tour that is included on this disc. Enjoy!
