In this month’s issue . . .
Hi everyone, and welcome to the November/December issue of The Language Teacher. I hope that you are all enjoying the cooler weather. It’s that time of year when I make mention of events such as Halloween, BBQs under the autumn leaves, luxuriating in outdoor hot springs, and feasting upon traditional Japanese autumn delicacies. However, please bear in mind, not that you need reminding, that this November is the month of the 44th JALT International Conference. This year we’ll be in Shizuoka and the conference will run from November 23–26 inclusive. If you haven’t already done so, book your space. The theme this year is Diversity and Inclusion. I, and all the other staff who work tirelessly behind the scenes of TLT, hope to see you there.
Autumn, it is said in Japan, is also the season to read, so with that in mind I’ll introduce some of the contents of this issue.
We have two Feature Articles this month: Takayuki Nakanishi investigates whether or not setting restrictions on extensive reading is the best practice. He presents his findings, accompanied by student feedback on a one-year project. Sarah L. Schipper writes about how Power Posing can help students increase confidence to participate in classroom discussions. In Readers’ Forum Andrew R. Tidmarsh and Danielle L. Kurihara look at ways to help first-year university students develop pragmatic fluency.
In addition to the above, we have our usual assortment of highly interesting and thought provoking articles. Be sure to find a quiet spot to indulge in a peaceful autumn read!
Alas, all good things come to an end and I am deeply saddened to say that this issue will be my last as coeditor. I have enjoyed my time immensely over the years I have been involved with TLT. I will move on to the role of advisor for one year. This of course means that we say a fond farewell to Phil Head, past coeditor and now retiring advisor. Phil has been a great help to all involved with the journal production over the years. He will be sorely missed and I hope that I can step up to the plate (an Americanism I learned during my time here. Surprisingly the phrase has nothing to do with cooking or, indeed, eating!!). Speaking of stepping up to the plate, Eric will remain as coeditor and will be joined by Antonija Cavcic. Antonija is thrilled to assume the position and will be responsible for the Reader's Forum section from January next year. We all wish her the best of luck and I hope that she enjoys the role as much as I did.
Well, I think that’s about it for this issue. All that remains is for me to wish you all the best of luck in your future endeavours and hope to see you at the conference!
Oh, one more thing! Since I was raised in Dumfries, Scotland and frequent a pub there called the Globe Inn—a pub favoured by Robert Burns—and since Halloween has just passed, I thought I’d sign off with some words from the Bard:

And gie’s a hand o’ thine!
And we’ll tak a right gude willie waught
For auld lang syne.

TLTの11/12月号へようこそ。皆様は涼しくなった気候を楽しんでいることと思います。ハロウィーンや紅葉の下でのバーベキュー、露天風呂でのくつろぎ、日本の伝統的な秋のごちそうを堪能できる季節になりました。皆様すでにご存じとは思いますが、11月は、JALTの第44回年次国際大会の月でもあります。今年は静岡の会場で、11月23〜26日に開催されます。参加の申し込みがまだでしたら、是非なさってください。今年のテーマはDiversity and Inclusion （多様性と受容力）です。私を始めTLTの舞台裏で根気強く働いている他のスタッフも、皆様に大会会場でお目にかかれるのを楽しみにしております。
日本でよく言われるように、秋は読書の季節でもあります。そういうわけで、今号では、それに関するものも紹介します。今月は、2つのFeature Articlesをお届けします。Takayuki Nakanishiは、 多読の際に一定の制限を加える方法について調査し、1年間の研究結果を学生のフィードバックと共に提示しています。Sarah L. Schipperは、授業内でのディスカッションにおいて、（両手を腰に当て、足を大きく広げるという）パワーポーズが学生の自信を高めるのにどのように役立つかについて書いています。
Readers’ Forumでは、Andrew TidmarshとDanielle Kuriharaが、大学1年生の語用論的流暢さ（pragmatic fluency）を向上させるのを手助けする方法について考察します。
この他にも、いつものように非常に興味深く示唆に富む様々な記事を用意しております。ぜひ静かな場所で秋の読書をお楽しみください。
良いことには必ず終わりがあります。非常に残念ですが、今号で、私のcoeditorの仕事は終了します。TLTに関わるようになってこれまでの数年間、大いに楽しんで仕事をしてきました。これからの1年間は、アドバイザーとして残ります。 そして、元coeditorであり、今号でアドバイザーの仕事を終えるPhil Headには、感謝の気持ちを込めてお別れのあいさつをいたします。Philは、論文作成に携わる人々を、何年間も熱心に支援してきました。
Philがいなくなるのはとても寂しいのですが、私も進んで物事に取り組めるよう頑張る（step up to the plate）つもりです。（これは私がTLTに関わってから学んだアメリカ的表現ですが、皿“plate”という言葉がでてくるのに料理や食べることとは全く関係がないのは驚きですよね!! 実は野球英語の投手板“pitcher’s plate”に関連しています。）「進んで物事に取り組む」と言えば、CoeditorのEricはそのまま残り、新たにAntonija Cavcicがcoeditorになります。Antonijaはこの新しい役職を喜んで引き受けてくれ、来年1月からReaders’ Forumの編集を担当します。彼女の成功を祈るとともに、私がそうであったように、楽しみながらこの仕事を続けてもらいたいと願っています。
今号に関しては以上です。最後に、皆様には、今後の成功をお祈りするとともに、大会でお会いできるのを楽しみにしております。
最後にもう1つ付け加えますが、私はスコットランドのダンフリーズで育ち、グローブ・インと呼ばれるパブによく行きます—ロバート・バーンズのお気に入りのパブですが—それに、丁度ハロウィーンが終わったことですし、この（エアシャーの）大詩人の詩の一節を書いて終わりにしたいと思います。
