The instructor will be expected to teach an oral communication course that supplements and gives practical experience in using the language presented in the overall syllabus of first-year junior high school English.

Job details:

The Ideal Candidate
A flexible, collaborative English teacher, with native English-level proficiency, experience teaching Japanese children or adolescents is preferred. Basic communicative ability in Japanese is also desired. A teacher of good humour who enjoys a high-energy classroom and can thrive in its sometimes boisterous environment would be an especially good fit for this position.

Our Students
The students of the course will be newly-admitted first-year junior high school boys. Some may have had some prior instruction in, or exposure to English, but most will be beginners except for their two-year experience at elementary school. Instruction in April assumes a “zero knowledge” of English vocabulary and grammar. Admission to Musashi is highly selective. As a result, the first-year students are unusually bright and often somewhat precocious. They are, nonetheless, typically active, vocal and spirited 12-year-old boys.

The Course
The instructor will be expected to teach an oral communication course that supplements and gives practical experience in using the language presented in the overall syllabus of first-year junior high school English. The goal is to encourage the personal usage of the grammar and vocabulary students learn in classes with their Japanese teachers, as well as develop their ability to interact in English.

Teamwork and Collaboration
The course will be designed by the full-time staff members at Musashi, who will also prepare the majority of teaching materials. The instructor will be responsible for teaching the twice-weekly lessons in partnership and collaboration with the Musashi staff. While the syllabus, textbooks, lesson plans and digital lesson presentation materials will be provided, the instructor may implement them according to his or her experience and individual teaching style. The collaboration of the instructor in the ongoing development of the course is welcome.
