This article expresses the author's personal experiences
and feelings concerning language learning and
teaching in a variety of contexts in Britain and Japan.
Along with this, some of the contemporary criticislns
made of language teaching in both countries are reviewed
and discussed. Although the language teaching
process in Japan is generally viewed in a critical light,
it is suggested that there are a number of ways in
which improvements might be made.
