In this month’s issue . . .
Dear readers, welcome to the July/August issue of The Language Teacher. I hope your semester is wrapping up smoothly and that you are finding time to enjoy the warmth of the season.
This issue includes one Feature Article and one Readers’ Forum piece. Our Feature Article is from Scott Kappler, who investigates why the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) remains underused in Japanese EFL classrooms and proposes practical ways to introduce it alongside existing pronunciation practices. Our Readers’ Forum piece is from Joshua Igbo and Ai Kubota, who report on a humanitarian crisis board game used in Japanese high school English classes to foster empathy, critical awareness, and meaningful communication.
In addition to these articles, this issue includes an interview with Professor Naoko Taguchi of Northern Arizona University, conducted by Jehan Cruz. Professor Taguchi, a plenary speaker at the JALT2025 International Conference, shares insights from her extensive work on L2 pragmatics and the development of pragmatic competence across study abroad, technology-mediated learning, and intercultural education contexts. Additionally, our many regular JALT Praxis columns offer a wealth of ideas and inspiration: My Share, TLT Wired, Younger Learners, Book Reviews, Teaching Assistance, Writers’ Workshop, JALT Focus, and Old Grammarians.

今号は、Feature Article 1本と Readers’ Forum 1本を掲載しています。Feature Articleでは、Scott Kappler が、日本のEFL教育現場において国際音声記号（IPA）が依然として十分に活用されていない理由を考察し、既存の発音指導と併用しながらIPAを導入するための実践的な方法を提案しています。Readers’ Forum では、Joshua IgboとAi Kubota が、日本の高校の英語授業において、共感力、批判的意識、そして意義あるコミュニケーション能力を育成するために活用した、人道危機をテーマにしたボードゲームについて報告しています。
これらの記事に加え、今号では Northern Arizona UniversityのNaoko Taguchiへのインタビューも掲載しています。インタビューはJehan Cruzによって行われました。JALT2025国際大会の基調講演者でもあるNaoko Taguchiは、第二言語語用論や、留学・テクノロジーを介した学習・異文化教育といった文脈における語用論的能力の発達について、これまでの豊富な研究経験に基づく知見を共有しています。さらに、My Share, TLT Wired, Younger Learners, Book Reviews, Teaching Assistance, Writers’ Workshop, JALT Focus, Old Grammariansといった、JALT Praxisの様々な連載コラムも、多くのアイデアと刺激を提供しています。

2026 JALT Research Grants
Application Period is Open
Each year, JALT awards up to three grants for a maximum of ¥100,000 each for research on language teaching in Japan. The grants aim to support language teachers with no outside sources of funding and encourage JALT members to engage in classroom-based research. Recipients of the 2026 grants receive funding to conduct their research in the 2027 academic year.
The deadline for application is October 18, 2026.
