The SMIS-English Manager will play a key role in overseeing the day-to-day operations of the SMIS-English language courses while contributing to the strategic direction of the programme.
TYPE: Full-time fixed term, initial two year contract
START DATE: August 2025 or earlier for the right candidate
REGULAR WORKING DAYS: Tuesday - Saturday
SALARY & BENEFITS:
- Monthly salary scale of between ¥350,000 - ¥650,000 depending on qualifications and relevant experience

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
ORGANISATION & OPERATIONS
● Oversee all aspects of the SMIS-English programme, including children’s and adult courses
● Regularly review courses and programmes to ensure quality, relevance, and alignment with learner needs
● Ensure the consistent delivery of engaging, well-structured curricula
● Manage SMIS-English timetables and calendars
● Maintain and update handbooks, policies, and operational procedures
● Report to the Head of School and Board of Trustees as required
● Operate confidently in both English and Japanese
FINANCES & HUMAN RESOURCES
● Manage the delegated annual budget in collaboration with the school’s finance office
● Ensure appropriate and sustainable staffing levels across all SMIS-English programmes
● Oversee contracts and administrative documentation for SMIS-English staff
● Provide leadership, guidance, and professional support to programme staff
● Model high-quality teaching through an active teaching commitment
MARKETING & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
● Develop and implement retention strategies to support student continuity
● Provide timely and informative course updates to students and families
● Collaborate with the website manager to create and maintain engaging content on the SMIS-English website
● Plan and promote open campus events and other enrolment initiatives, including digital and print marketing
● Build and maintain collaborative partnerships with local organisations and institutions
● Represent SMIS-English at community, local, and regional events
POSITION SPECIFICATIONS
LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY
● Native Japanese speaker with equivalent of TOEIC 840/ EIKEN Grade pre-1 or,
● Native English speaker with Japanese language ability equivalent to JLPT, N2
QUALIFICATIONS
● Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field e.g. education, business, language
● Valid English language teaching certification
● Eligibility to maintain a work visa in Japan
EXPERIENCE & SKILLS
● Minimum of five years’ experience teaching English to children and/or adults
● Supervisory experience or programme management in a related setting
● Familiarity with the local English language landscape and market trends in Japan
● Experience of working with Japanese and foreign nationals
● Confident IT skills, including Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Forms, Gmail)
● Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with diverse stakeholders
● Well-organised, self-motivated, and capable of managing multiple priorities
● Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment
