Peng (973) reported that Japanese female and male junior high school students
used different pronoun address systems. His study was replicated, with
modifications, in 1993 at a women's junior high school. This newer study found
evidence of language change in pronoun use, with current women students
feeling comfortable using previously "male" speech.
