We are seeking a professional and passionate English teacher for our Junior and Senior High School in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi. The position is available from April 1, 2026. This is a direct-hire position.
Candidates should be confident in teaching English entirely in English (without reliance on Japanese), and able to support students across all four core skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to create engaging, student-centered lessons, and maintain a motivating classroom environment.
Teachers are also expected to support students outside of scheduled class time. This may include helping with exam preparation, speech contests, essay writing, and university applications. Additional duties include attending staff meetings and collaborating with colleagues. Japanese language ability is therefore an advantage.
Baiko Gakuin is a private, co-educational institution comprising a university, high school, and kindergarten. Founded in 1872 by missionaries Henry and Elizabeth Stout, it is a Christian school that seeks to preserve Christian traditions while offering high-quality, progressive, and internationally minded education.
[Position Requirements]
- English: High level English proficiency (Regardless of the nationality)
- Bachelor’s degree
- Willingness to relocate to Shimonoseki, Japan
- Ability to adapt to a predominantly Japanese work environment
- Commitment to fulfill the full contract period
[Preferred Qualifications / Skills]
- Japanese language ability
- Experience teaching at high school, university, or in ELT
- CELTA, DELTA, or equivalent certification
- Postgraduate degree in TEFL, applied linguistics, or related fields
- Experience preparing students for STEP Eiken, IELTS, TOEFL, or Cambridge exams
- Familiarity with online teaching platforms (e.g., Microsoft Teams)
[Key Responsibilities]
- Teach English to junior and senior high school students. Note: This is NOT an ALT position. Teachers in this position are responsible for leading their own classes.
- Plan and prepare lessons using assigned textbooks, and create supplementary materials as needed.
- Maintain accurate records of student performance and assign term grades.
- Promote cross-cultural understanding and global awareness.
- Organise and participate in extracurricular activities such as English Club, speech contests, and English camps.
- Support students preparing for STEP Eiken and other English proficiency exams.
- Participate in open school events, student performances, and help coordinate English tests hosted at the school.
[Conditions of Employment]
[Working Days & Hours]
- Monday to Friday: 8:10 am – 6:10 pm (includes a 1-hour lunch break)
- The contract includes provision of overtime for up to 45 hours/month, covering after-school activities, English Club, occasional Saturdays (e.g., for open days, test supervision, etc.)
[Benefits]
- Salary: ¥3,500,000 – ¥4,500,000 per year (depending on qualifications and experience)
- Sponsorship for a working visa provided if needed
- Enrolment in Employment Insurance, Social Insurance, and Japanese Pension Scheme
- Holidays: All school holidays, plus 15 paid vacation days per year (increasing annually to a maximum of 20 days)
- Support for acquiring a teaching license for junior and senior high school

- Annual contract renewal possible from April 1 each year, subject to mutual agreement
