In recent years, intersectionality has moved from a niche subset of U.S. legal studies and academia to become a commonly recognised buzzword in mainstream media and academic discourse. As it has done so, it has traversed geographical, cultural, political and disciplinary boundaries, emerging in the ELT and applied linguistics fields in the last ten years. In this paper, we give an introduction to the concept of intersectionality by first tracing its roots in U.S. legal studies and Black activist feminism. We then move on to document the various ways that it has been used so far in ELT and applied linguistics, focusing on language teacher identity and teacher education. We finish this introduction to intersectionality by offering a framework for teachers and researchers in the ELT and applied linguistics fields that is tailored to their specific needs. This includes using intersectionality as a social theory and as an analytical tool for research, and also as a practical approach for teachers to implement what we term as Intersectional Critical Language Pedagogy in the language classroom.
