Recent studies have examined the efficacy of machine translation use among readers. However, while researchers have long known the importance of lexical coverage for reading outcomes, studies have not examined how translation allocation affects reading outcomes at different coverage levels. Therefore, this study, involving 37 Japanese readers of English, investigated how the presence of L1 translations from Google Translate affected reading outcomes at different lexical coverage levels (content recall: 88%, 92%, 96%, 100%; vocabulary form recognition and meaning recall: 88%, 92%, 96%). The results suggested that, while content recall increased with higher coverage levels, providing translations significantly enhanced content recall only at the 96% coverage level. Translation availability negatively impacted vocabulary form recognition across all coverage levels, likely due to reduced attention to target words. Translations were associated with higher overall meaning recall, though recall was extremely low in both conditions and the effect appears to have been driven by a minority of participants. Implications for L2 educators and researchers are discussed.
