This paper describes a replication of a previous mixed-methods study (Chen, 2021) which looked at the effect of a group project involving the production of English-language videos on university students’ speaking abilities. The original study, conducted in a Taiwanese university context, found a large effect on students’ speaking scores and an overall positive perception of the video-making project on the part of the students. This replication aimed to reproduce the study in a Japanese context, comparing the results with those of the original study. The replication also showed a large effect, though the change in actual scores was smaller than in the original. The replication then extended the original study by examining skills beyond speaking and found a medium-sized effect on reading. The qualitative results were also found to be similar in both studies, with the students’ impressions of the project being largely positive.
