In Japan, study abroad (SA) is closely linked to the policy construct of guroubaru jinzai (global talent), which frames international mobility as a means of cultivating globally competent human resources. In practice, this competence is most often evaluated through standardized English test scores. While language gains are an expected and valuable outcome of SA, relying on linguistic assessment as a primary measure of the SA experience risks overlooking an array of skills that students acquire, narrowing what counts in the development of global talent. Drawing on qualitative data from Japanese students studying abroad in Canada, we illustrate that SA also supports the development of socio-emotional and interpersonal competencies that align closely with the stated objectives of guroubaru jinzai. We examine how these forms of growth emerge through lived experience and discuss existing assessment approaches that could complement language testing.
