Homestays comprise a large component of study-abroad (SA) programs, but the experiences of students vary considerably in these environments. This paper reports on perceived inclusion in the family during homestays among Japanese university students who participated in yearlong study-abroad programs. Through a thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews conducted with eight participants, the study examines how students’ perceptions of being treated “like a family member” or “like a boarder” influenced their homestay experiences. The findings indicate that family inclusion during SA is an important condition that can influence emotional well-being, quality communication with host family members, and adjustment to unfamiliar surroundings. In situations with limited inclusion, the results included feelings of emotional distance and limited communication between the student and host. Ultimately, this analysis underscores the importance of inclusion in homestays and discusses the implications for both SA preparation and student support.
