This exploratory study examined differences in students’ emotional responses to study abroad, comparing “chaperoned” and “unchaperoned” study abroad programs (SAPs). The research study was carried out by the author, a faculty member who administers SAPs. The participants were 100 undergraduate students at a national university in rural Japan who participated in short-term SAPs for three to four weeks. They were given a questionnaire before and after the programs to investigate differences between the groups in student anxiety and satisfaction with the programs. The questionnaire included items about anxiety, adequacy of pre-departure briefing and overall satisfaction. Eight Likert-scale items were analyzed using Mann-Whitney U tests. In the results, both groups with and without a chaperone reported anxiety. Their satisfaction was enhanced when the support received during the time abroad was well aligned with their conceptions of learning. Educational interventions aimed at tackling anxiety are discussed.
