Collocations are commonly used, non-idiomatic sequences of words that tend to be sequenced together such as “reach a consensus” or “be widely adopted.” Many studies have signified the prevalence of these chunks of language in everyday English (e.g., Goulart, 2019), suggesting their importance in English learning. While incidental learning may be helpful, recent studies have shown that explicit language learning, such as that through multimodal flashcards (Nakata, 2020; Takeda, 2023), can be effective for truly knowing a word (Nation, 2020). Correlational analysis of data from 114 university students revealed interesting patterns in how different practice modes impact short-term versus long-term collocation retention. While writing-based practice showed initial advantages (beta= .365, p= .01, relative weight = 27.85%), our statistical analysis uncovered unexpected results about the role of contextualized listening (beta= .235, p= .012, relative weight = 30.46%) for sustained vocabulary development. Ultimately, this highlights a significant shift in vocabulary acquisition strategies, demonstrating that receptive auditory input, when paired with rich sentence context, can be more powerful for long-term retention than traditional output-driven tasks.
