Although students in Japan encounter literature in course books and must acquire some knowledge of literature for test-taking, their engagement with such texts is often low. However, creative writing—including haiku, fiction, and creative nonfiction—can create opportunities for students to explore their own interests, express themselves, and further develop their language skills. In addition, student engagement can be enhanced through the integration of non-linguistic modes and digital tools.
