Since the introduction of the Foreign Language Reading Anxiety Scale (FLRAS; Saito et al., 1999), it has been widely used to assess learners’ reading anxiety. However, when administered to Japanese college students, the FLRAS has issues, leading to the development of a new reading anxiety questionnaire (Oshima, 2024). Although previous researchers (e.g., Ghaith, 2020) have shown that reading anxiety negatively affects comprehension, there remains limited understanding of how Japanese students’ reading anxiety differs between their first language (L1; Japanese) and second language (L2; English). In this study, 50 Japanese college students with low English proficiency completed the new questionnaire twice: for L1, and for L2. Results showed significantly higher anxiety in L2 reading. Three patterns were also identified: low L1 and high L2 anxiety; low L1 but varied L2 anxiety; and notable L1 anxiety among some students. These findings highlight the need to consider L1 reading anxiety alongside L2 anxiety.
