In Japanese EFL classrooms, icebreakers are widely used to build community and support speaking confidence, but their effectiveness for lower-proficiency learners remains unclear. This study examines the relationships among English-only icebreakers, classroom community, fear of evaluation, and speaking self-efficacy among CEFR Basic User-level Japanese EFL learners, using questionnaire data from 216 students and structural equation modeling. Results show that English-only icebreakers did not predict classroom community but had the strongest direct effect on speaking self-efficacy. The classroom community predicted fear of positive evaluation but not negative evaluation. Overall, while icebreakers may enhance confidence, an English-only approach may limit learners’ ability to build classroom relationships, suggesting a need for adaptation in their implementation for lower-proficiency learners.
