In this paper we discuss interview data from one participant from a larger study to understand the development of autonomy through a content-based English class studying Japanese culture. The participant, part of a larger study of autonomy at a private women’s university, agreed to an in-depth semi-structured interview after course completion. Data were examined for factors related to language learning, awareness of the concepts, and learner autonomy. The participant reported strong motivation to learn English but was unsatisfied with the class level, which led to frustration. However, her attitude toward learning and goals for her future career helped her to recover her motivation. The results suggest that providing students with clear steps for becoming independent learners leads to the development of autonomy and contributes to improving English skills. Collaborative learning environments and rapport between teachers and learners are pivotal.
