JALT is a professional
organization dedicated to the improvement of language learning and teaching
in Japan, a vehicle for the exchange of new ideas and techniques and a means
of keeping abreast of new developments in a rapidly changing field.
JALT, formed in 1976, has an international membership of over 3,500.
There are currently 40 JALT chapters
and affiliates throughout Japan.
JALT is the Japan affiliate of International TESOL (Teachers of English
to Speakers of Other Languages) and a branch of IATEFL (International Association
of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language).
Publications
JALT publishes The Language Teacher, a monthly magazine
of articles and announcements on professional concerns; the semi-annual
JALT Journal; JALT Conference Proceedings (annual);
and JALT Applied Materials (a monograph series).
Meetings and Conferences
The JALT
International Conference on Language Teaching/Learning attracts
some 2,000 participants annually. The program consists of over 300 papers,
workshops, colloquia and poster sessions, a publishers' exhibition of some
1,000m2, an employment center, and social events. Local chapter
meetings are held on a monthly or bi-monthly basis in each JALT chapter.
Special Interest
Groups, SIGs, disseminate information on areas of special interest.
JALT also sponsors special events, such as conferences on Testing and other
themes.
Awards for
Research Grants and Development
Awarded annually. Applications must be made to the JALT Research Grants
Committee Chair by August 16. Awards are announced at the annual conference.
