- Guidance for cover letter -

For your cover letter, we would like to know a little about you, your interests, experiences in teaching and what makes you an ideal fit for our school (up to one A4 page in length).

To help you with this, information, about the school and a current prospectus can be found in Japanese on our website. www.hiroshimajohoku.ed.jp

In addition to general teacher responsibilities, the position is unique given the nature of the courses run. In the junior high school, each grade receives two hours of ‘Discovery’ a week. In the high school, one-hour a week. The Discovery course was originally developed to meet government (MEXT) guidelines for 総合的な学習, that has now become 総合的な探究の時間 the aims of which can be found online.

Lessons are taught in original thematic blocks and courses, and delivered through English. To aid student understanding we have dedicated classrooms that leverage technology and are conducive to an all-English learning environment. Lessons are enhanced by, but not dependent upon, technology as traditional teaching methods are also used. An ability to design interesting syllabi and stimulating lessons is essential.

The successful applicant will be the fifth member of foreign staff in an English department of approximately twenty. In addition to weekly departmental meetings, the Discovery team also meets regularly to discuss, review, and develop course material and generate ideas. The staff work closely together, offering constructive criticism and support to each other in a professional, but relaxed environment.

We appreciate that writing a cover letter is a time-consuming process and thank you in advance.

If selected during initial screening, following the ‘Anticipated selection procedure’ (see above) applicants will be invited to a 20-minute online interview in December or early January. Details will follow.
