Title:
Conceptual and Lexical Buildup in Strategic Oral Production
Keywords:
Communication strategies, teachability, procedural knowledge, Levelt's model, lexical strategies
Abstract:
This study deals with a fundamental pedagogical question about communication strategies (CSs). Various empirical studies about teaching CSs have shown that teaching them improves learnersf communicative competence; however, the mechanisms for this are by no means clear. Based on Leveltfs (1989) psycholinguistic model, an attempt was made in this study to clarify them by narrowing its focus only on a Conceptualizer component in his model, while controlling another component, Formulator. Empirical data were collected from 39 participants, of which 19 participated in a 5-week CS training program. From the results obtained by analyzing the collected data, the study discusses that teaching CS possibly facilitates learnersf processing in the Conceptualizer component by changing their lexical knowledge of the target language to procedural knowledge.
