This paper examines the errors in the third person
singular (z) morpheme, using data from longitudinal
studies of the spontaneous speech of adult J apanese
learning English. Sentence length and grammatical
complexity were found to be significant factors in
the error rate, as was phonological interference (production
of word final consonants and clusters) and
lexical choice. Some of the implications for teachers
are discussed.
